In November 2016, a very dear friend and mentor, named Leigh, passed away unexpectedly. The months following were so difficult and even now I still struggle with losing her. In April 2017, on Leigh’s birthday, I took the photo this painting is based off of and wrote these words: “Leigh’s birthday is today. She would have been 30…so to celebrate and remember her, I spent the morning being vulnerable with a dear friend over a latte; something that Leigh was so good at doing. Not only was Leigh a safe person that I could trust to share my mess, but she was also so willing to share her own struggles. Embrace the messiness of life. Vulnerability scares me, but Leigh helped show the joy and freedom that comes with it. Also don’t even get me started on Leigh’s love of coffee…”
Another Leigh quote that this painting represents for me: “Invest your life in people; because although it is risky and every person that you meet is a guaranteed goodbye, the risk is worth it. Tears over any kind of separation are far better than never having taken any kind of initiative towards someone.”
